This isn’t your mother’s “chant”

17-Mar-12

As I’ve composed my forthcoming mix (in the burning and packaging process) I’ve been reflecting on what exactly I find myself listening.  In terms of number of rotations it has to be the Monks and Metropolitan Choirs of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra.  I was tempted to actually include such scared music on my mix but thought I’d just suggest it to everyone in this manner.  Check it out, even if your not especially religious it can’t be missed.

Royal Headache is making some damn fine Australian garage-punk that you should know about. Soulful. Great vocals. Sincere stuff. Their self-titled debut came out last year, and had I spent the time with this I would of easily dropped into my year end list. Buy it.

ME 11/11 On the Way!

31-Dec-11

I’m proud report that my November mix is completed and as soon as the Post Office opens on Tuesday, it’ll be in the mail.  Thanks so much for your patience on this one; I’m not one to be late with anything but November turned out to be a crazy month for me, closing and moving into my first house, a short sale that needed a bunch of work done right away.

The end of the year is a time of lists.  It was tempting to base my mix on the ubiquitous best-of lists that seem to come from just about every publication, but no one would want me to replicate NPR’s two-hour year-end program.  Don’t get me wrong, 2011 was full of great albums.  Some of my top picks were St Vincent, Stephen Malkmus, Wilco, m83, Real Estate… heck, I even liked this year’s Ryan Adams album for the first time since my college days.  Instead, I based my mix on the very detailed notes I took all year, cluing me into new tracks and albums to investigate, giving special consideration to those that, at least in my market, didn’t get the attention I felt they deserved.  Many artists have been snatched up by previous mixes; as you can see the tracklist is very fall/winter heavy.  A few tracks were released in previous years, but about 90% of them are late 2011.

I’d love to hear your feedback.  Enjoy the mix and have a great new year.
